»Astonishment
is the beginning of all research.
Suddenly
something strikes you.«
– Wolfgang Wickler
German behavioural
scientist and zoologist
The entire field of research and development
can evolve free from commercial constraints, although there is no objection to
developers being involved in the fruits of their work. It is good when
companies have their development departments and pay their employees well.
However, there are also fields in which
research does not at first appear to have any commercial use. It may possibly
even run counter to the interests of some companies. An invention could make
the products of an entire concern or even an industrial sector superfluous. The
new invention would perhaps be a blessing for humankind and nature but no
company wanting to finance such a product can be found.
With the active basic income researchers who
work on unconventional subjects are not dependent on other people’s opinions.
They are in any case provided for and can get on with their research work.
